We’ve finally made it to summer! If you're anything like me, this time of the year is bittersweet. You're sad to see your students go, but you're also relieved and ready to take some much need time to rest. I know that it’s tempting to push all school-related thoughts aside until August rolls back around. After all, our break is well-earned! But I also know that right now—while the school year is still fresh in my mind—is the perfect time for me to reflect on what worked well this year and what could be improved for next. Taking just a little time to reflect now can set up an even smoother and more impactful year ahead.
What Went Well
Looking back, I’m proud of several initiatives that made a real difference in student learning and engagement this year:
- Vertical Whiteboards: Incorporating vertical whiteboards transformed my classroom collaboration. Students engaged in lessons that felt dynamic and accessible, making it easier to visualize concepts and share ideas.
- Using Data to Improve Math Scores: One of the biggest successes this year was leveraging student assessment data to identify gaps and adjust instruction accordingly. By tracking individual progress, I could personalize support and ultimately help students improve their math skills.
- Inquiry-Based Lessons: Continuing to use inquiry-based teaching deepened students' critical thinking skills. Allowing students to explore questions, experiment, and engage in discussions fostered their curiosity and independence in learning.
Next Year’s Focus
Every year I try to pick one thing I want to focus on for the year. (This year was trying vertical whiteboards!) Next year, I plan on focusing on differentiating instruction, particularly for high-achieving students. While I strive to meet diverse learning needs, I want to create even more opportunities for advanced learners to be challenged. I believe that advanced learners are often easily overlooked when it comes to having their needs met in the classroom. I know that I’m guilty of doing this as well, which is why I want to do better. I'm going to try offering enrichment activities, personalized projects, or deeper problem-solving tasks that push their thinking further.
What I’m Doing Now to Prepare
So, what am I doing this summer to prepare myself for next year?
- Researching Differentiation Strategies: I'm exploring new methods to tailor instruction for advanced students, including flexible grouping, project-based learning, and self-paced challenges.
- Reflecting and Planning: I'm taking time to revisit lesson plans, analyze student feedback, and refine my instructional approach. Small adjustments now will make a big impact later.
- Exploring New Tech Tools: I’m looking into additional tech resources that could enhance engagement and streamline learning.
- Recharging and Reconnecting: While preparation is key, so is rest! I'm prioritizing relaxation and inspiration this summer, knowing that a refreshed mindset will lead to an even stronger start come fall.
Taking time now to reflect and plan ensures that I will go into the new school year with confidence and intention. By acknowledging what worked, identifying areas for growth, and preparing thoughtfully, I know I’ll be ready to create an even better learning experience for my students.
What are you doing to prepare for next school year?
